Voters approve town, Region 9 budget and Barlow roof restoration

Redding’s town budget passed by 379 votes at Tuesday’s referendum.

Region 9’s budget for Joel Barlow High School also passed in both Redding and Easton. The budget for Region 9 has to pass by the majority of vote in both towns that share the cost of the school.

Redding and Easton taxpayers also approved a roof restoration project at the high school. The cost of the project is shared between the two towns based on student enrollment.

The proposed town budget of $47,466,321 for fiscal year 2014-15 passed 676 yes to 297 no.

In Redding, 667 votes were cast in favor of the $22,696,603 Region 9 budget with 307 opposed. Easton taxpayers also approved the budget 485 to 19. It takes a combined majority of the two towns to approve the Region 9 budget. Redding’s share of the budget is $12,278,863; Easton’s is $10,417,741.

For the roof restoration proposal at Barlow, Redding taxpayers approved the project 721 to 252. Easton also approved the project, 498 to 146.

The total cost of the roof restoration projected is estimated to be $1,455,000. Redding’s share is $787,155. Easton’s share is $667,845.

Mill Rate

Following the vote, the Board of Finance set a 28.91 mill rate, down by 0.04 from the current 28.95.

Taxpayers will page $28.91 per $1,000 of assessed value for the 2014-15 fiscal year.
